Description
Charles H. Winner (known as “Doc”) was an American comic artist who created the newspaper gag-a-day comic 'Tubby' (1923-1926), later remodeled and retitled as 'Elmer' (1926-1956). While the main character’s mother names him 'Chester', everyone else calls him 'Tubby'. Tubby was often depicted hanging out with his friends and a little dog. By the second series, the lead’s name becomes Elmer Tuggle, but the characters and gags otherwise stay pretty much the same.

In this Sunday strip, Elmer apparently is getting into a fight with another boy over who will take a girl to a party. When Elmer wins, the gag twist reveals the loser actually had to escort the girl to the party (obviously at the risk of cooties). Doc Winner has signed in the last panel.

Ahh, simpler days. These two remind me of the vultures from the animated Jungle Book.

And so my king died, and my brothers died, barely a year ago. Long I pondered my king's cryptic talk of victory. Time has proven him wise, for from free Greek to free Greek, the word was spread that bold Leonidas and his three hundred, so far from home, laid down their lives. Not just for Sparta, but for all Greece and the promise this country holds!

Truly, 300 men all fighting to save Sparta and to NOT take Queen Gorgo to the dance on Friday night. Cooties.

Boy you should know gag
I've got you on my mind
Your comic Doc Winner
I've been watching you

At night, I think of you
I want, to be your lady, Tubby
Elmer’s game is on, give me a call boo
If your lovin's strong, gonna give my dog to you
At night, I think of you
I want, Tubby to party, maybe
If your gag is on, give me a call boo
If your Tuggle's strong, Winner gives my art to you

Every date I pray my art can Win
Every right Sunday I can call Tub my man (yeah, yeah, yeah)
I need you, I want you, to have you, hold you, sez you
So I'm drawing art, every weekend
Just to see my boo again

My affection for these old-timey comics grows exponentially with age.

Like the He-Man Woman-Haters Club, reflective of the rigid gender separation and misogyny that characterized the early 20th century.

Hahaha! Was she surprised! Sez you! You're building quite a collection of strips! Thank you for their history! II can't figure out their gallery order. They're don't appear to be by year, artist, or title.

Hmm, I've set that gallery up to be grouped by title. I'll have to go back and check the gallery settings. Thanks for the head's up!

Ah! Got it! I had looked at the alphabetical order of titles rather than grouping by title. I get kind of crazy with gallery order. Which reminds me, I need to organize a couple of my galleries!

I am the same way, but most of that time is trying to keep the Star Wars galleries in order. I have a backlog of strips to upload, so I'm trying to get them up first, then I'll do a major resort of the full gallery. One of the house keeping chores I enjoy focusing on to stay engaged with my collection, especially when I'm trying to not spend on new art!
