Description
I've been after an Eclipso: The Darkness Within page for a while now. A line-wide
summer crossover event that ran through all the DC Annuals at the time. Basically,
if you were holding onto one of Eclipso's Black Diamonds and managed to get pissed
off while doing do, the villain could possess your body. The storyline was bookended
by two specials. By the second special, Eclipso has an entire army of possessed
super-heroes in his tower on the Moon. Those that remain are determined to launch
a direct attack using a pair of L.E.G.I.O.N. and Thanagarian starships to bring
the remaining non-possessed heroes to the Moon. I poured over this particular issue
over and over again. What a great battle between Superman and a possessed
Mon-El/Valor! The two starships heading out to attack Eclipso reminded me of the
Quintesson Cruiser and Minnow (Junkion ship) heading out to attack Unicron in
Transformers The Movie! Super-Heroes in Space! It's a Peanut Butter and Chocolate
combo to me even to this day!

Panel One:
Wildebeast (aka Baby), Strata, Garv, Nightwing, Phase, Vril Dox, Telepath, and Stealth
are in the foreground of the two crashed starships. And off in the distance, we can
make out Hawkman, Guy Gardner and Starman. Also likely, Professor Haley of the
Challengers of the Unknown and Black Canary, since they show up on the following
panels.

Panel Two:
Vril Dox defers to Starman's experience with Eclipso's Dark Palace on the Moon.

Panel Three:
Unbeknownst to our heroes, Starman is also possessed by Eclipso (unlike the other
heroes who have a visual 'tell' that they've been 'Eclipsed' with the purple
half-moon-face, Starman's ability to modify his facial features have hidden that
particular tell from his clueless allies) and is recommending the direct assault
only to bring them all under his control.

Professor Haley of the Challengers of the Unknown suspects a trap. Black Canary
stands by her spacesuit.

Panels Two and Three have Starman serve as the Transition between the two panels
as he literally breaks the panel border by flying through from Panel Three to
Panel Two. This is a pretty cool effect!

Panel Four:
As they move in on the palace, Eclipso starts to break character, calling
Professor Haley a fool (which is pretty out of character for the
Will Payton Starman).

Beautiful page Derek! I love all those deep inks. I'm also glad to see you finally added a nice Eclipso: The Darkness Within page. The only thing the OA is missing is a plastic black diamond glued to it!

I like the design of these space suits and partial shot of the ship.  They are bulked out with curves to feel like Sears' signature style of anatomy.  Panel 2-3 split is also pretty cool to slow down the pace.

That top panel splash is top notch and in deep space brings it all in balance for me !

The moment any hero says "you fool!", it's a dead giveaway that he's turned bad.

Well, Namor was one of the stars of a series entitled Super-Villain Team-Up.
