Description

Fontaine Fox (1884-1964) was the genius behind the wonderfully eclectic, beautifully (and expressively!) drawn Toonerville Folks, which ran from 1910 to 1955. Rarely did Fox bring politics into his panel cartoon, but he certainly did so in this piece published on December 6, 1948. A bit more than a month earlier, Harry Truman defeated Thomas Dewey in a surprising upset victory for President. Granpaw Sims, “The Hide-Bound Republican” was certainly not happy about Truman’s victory! This is really a wonderful cartoon, from drawing to gag. It even has one of Fox’s little critters at the lower border. The piece measures nearly 10”x 9¼” and is in Fine condition. It looks like the panel may be been tipped-down to a board, but there is no glue staining visible. There is a light vertical fold down the middle, which does not extend to the board. A terrific cartoon by one of the true greats. $145.00 + 12.00 first class shipping. SOLD!
