Description
Why did Brian write "thanks for the oyster Peter"?

Jim Amash and I invited Brian, Herb Trimpe and his wife Patricia, and another couple to dinner at Legal Sea Foods during Heroes Con 2010. The couple ordered raw oysters as an appetizer. When Brian mentioned he had never tried them before they insisted he try one. Brian seemed to find it as least palatable.

He surprised me the next day at the con when he offered to draw a free sketch in my book and asked which character I wanted. At that time I wasn't that familiar with Brian's work -- yes, I'm an idiot -- so I asked for one of my favorite characters, the Golden Age Sandman. It was a very nice gesture and I got a kick out of personalization of the sketch. Thanks Brian!

This is the perfect choice for Bolland as he did it to mean something to you and remind you of the dinner whenever you look at it again.

Envious of both the art and experience. Bolland is a terrific talent and I have never had the privilege of meeting him.

Congratulations of the addition to your collection and thanks of sharing it here with us!

So awesome!!! Love that story, really glad you got to have that experience (also with Herb Trimpe of course). Very nice that Brian hooked you up with a sketchbook piece for free and very unique to have something by him that most likely he never gets requested. congrats!

Thanks, Kavi. I've met Brian twice, the first time being NYCC where he did a Joker in the book. I had at least read The Killing Joke! I broke bread a couple of times with Herb and Patricia. I first met them at a DC con; Herb did a Hulk in the book. They were so nice. Herb appreciated and loved meeting fans. He would say they bought the books, allowing him to earn a living as a comic artist.

That is a memorable story. Not sure if you know but BB did the cover of Secret Origins 7 back in the, I think, 1980s which featured the Golden Age Sandman (plus Green Lantern).

Thanks, Simon. I didn't know! The cover is glorious and the origin story is interesting. I'm glad you flagged that book! Thanks again!

I know!! I told fellow collector Lee Harmon a couple of days ago that I had a Bolland Sandman sketch in my gallery. I was surprised when he came back and said it's not there. I think I know what happened. Back in the day I was a bit shy about putting this piece on CAF because it's kind of personal. I intended to add it last year, but wasn't happy with the scan and never got back to it. It's a bear to scan. The sketch is a bit crooked. The way that page lies on the scanner makes it look more crooked than it is. However, I'm happy with this new one, finally!

Well, this is a fun piece and quite possible the only Brian Bolland Golden Age Sandman drawing in existence! But as often happens in situations like these, I gotta admit that I love the background story even more!

Thanks, Rubén! I learned from an earlier comment that he drew this character in the cover for Secret Origins 7.
