Description

Carl Barks made this hilarious 10-pager story in 1965 and got paid then $455 from the complete story: its script and inked artwork. It was later published in Walt Disney's Comics & Stories #308 (May 1966, in newstands the comic book was a few months earlier).

At that time all original artwork was trashed by the publisher after it was photographed, and as a big surprise Barks got as a retirement present back his original artwork for 5 of his US 24-pagers, they were from US #59-63, and also this complete 10-pager: The Beauty Business.

It seems that Barks liked this story a lot once he kept the complete artwork in his possession up to the mid-1990s. He started selling the other retirement presents, page by page, already in December 1969.
US #59 North of The Yukon was the other 24-pager he kept himself up to until the 1990s.

Then later the provenance of this artwork looks to be following.
After 1994 Barks most likely sold the complete story directly to Carsten Laqua. Because it appeared for sale, as a complete story, in his gallery and mailing catalog. First the story was for sale as a complete 10-pager, but it didn't sold with the asked price. So, Carsten sold the story page by page, and got more than the original asking price was. This is a classical case for original comic art collectors. But it makes me sorry that complete stories are that way "destroyed". This was the very last Barks' complete story ever somebody could have had. At that time Steve Geppi still had complete 24-pager US #59 North of The Yukon story, but it was also sold page by page in the 2010s by Heritage Auctions.

After leaving Carsten Laqua's gallery in the 1990s this page was kept in the Netherlands almost 30 years in a very remarkable collection, which was partly sold in 2025 by HA. And then I became the happy caretaker of this artwork :-)

In 1994 when I published my study about Barks' surviving comic book artwork I only had a letter from Barks (dated to 1991) where he confirmed to me the existence of this complete story artwork. Nothing else was then publicly known. Maybe this piece of information was a catalyst for Carsten Laqua asking this story from Barks? ;-)

I dare to say that this page is the best one from this story, and it works also a single 1-pager brilliantly. There are also great punchlines and hard boiled dialogue, which is not that common for Disney comics.

I used some time to find a suitable frame for this artwork, first tried something closer to the pearl necklace once it was there in the artwork but finally this high gloss piano black frame with a deep profile looked the best.

Additional photo is presenting the original page vs Finnish Aku Ankka from 1969 where the story was first time published in Finland, just to present how much bigger the original artworks have been vs printed stuff.

Very cool with the full provenance! Looks like Barks knew that extreme makeovers would someday be very popular!
