Description
"Guadalcanal" by Paul S. Newman. April-June 1964.

I like Sam's dry-brush rendering of ack-ack bursts. Although he tells the colorist in the margin to put "yellow in all blasts," the published page shows more red, orange, and white than yellow in them.

His margin note "F6F" identifies the fighters he drew as Grumman F6F Hellcats. However, they didn't go into action until later in the war, according to Wikipedia. Aviators from the carrier task force protecting the invasion probably flew F4F Wildcat fighters. Marines pilots on the island at Henderson Field flew Wildcats as well as Douglas SBD Dauntless dive bombers, both of which were also flown during the Battle of Midway. SDB stood for Scout Bomber Douglas, although its nickname was Slow But Deadly. Together these and other aircraft constituted Henderson Field's Cactus Air Force, Cactus being the island's codename.

Like those Time Life documentaries of WWII presented in 10 VHS tapes, this takes us through the moments of battle and the difficult decisions to be made that shaped the outcome of the war.

I love those bottom two panels, natch. Good to see you finally mentioning the great drybrush, Peter!

Thanks, Rubén, for pointing out his drybrush work in the Midway pages!

Nice art throughout! I love the clean image of the middle panel in particular.

The dry brush work is def amazing as you pointed out! I will second Miki's comment about the 2nd panel, it really stands out on this page. Seeing the other carrier in the distance while you see a plane takeoff and men on the deck of another gives a great depth effect.

If you drank a bottle of that, that's like... that's like... like nine or ten gulps. Couldn't you tell that was ketchup?

Love the fighter pilots battling the flak.
