Little Nemo Sunday Oct 7, 1906

Here is a pretty special piece of history and classic comic art. Winsor McCay Little Nemo art is royalty in this hobby. This is the third panel from the Oct 7 1906 Little Nemo Sunday by Winsor McCay. There is a lot about this to like. I am offering this for sale. Below is my description and things to think about if you have always wanted a Little Nemo but knew you would never be able to stretch for a full Sunday. This could be the answer you were waiting for.

This is a panel from a 6 panel Sunday meaning a larger panel than you would normally find from most Sundays which would have 12 to 16 panels. It is wider art than the typical Marvel page so not a small image. This is a particularly early Sunday from the first 12 months of the strip which makes it even rarer and more sought after. This particular Sunday is the conclusion and transition from the very famous Elephant short story line so a historically and artistically important sequence. I have included scans of the Sunday along with the 2 previous Sundays in extra images. I believe that if this Sunday was complete it would be a higher end example and would likely sell for $120-150+k. This particular panel has the Princess of Slumberland inviting Nemo into a car as a tired sun looks on. Just look at the nouveau design of the carriage! This particular example is not marred by racially insensitive caricatures or content which makes some Little Nemos and other art by McCay less palatable. Also, the image has great blacks and lines so not as muted as some of the later Sundays. This would frame up beautifully and perhaps scratch that Little Nemo itch.

So, I am asking $19k for this piece. It is 1/6 of a Sunday that would be worth $120-150+k. It is a great stand alone panel and has so much of what you could ask for in a McCay Little Nemo in a single image (Little Nemo, a Princess, the sun, a great car and a classic McCay costumed character...it really has everything except a bed). It is a larger size image that your would normally ever find in single panels from Sundays as it was only a 6 panel Sunday. I think the price is bit low as the market for people who want a McCay but can't reach a full Sunday is probably larger and has stronger demand than for a full Sunday. When was the last time you saw a great panel for sale? Never? If you are looking, this is the one you have been waiting for and I suspect it will go quickly.

I forgot to mention the cherry on top of all of this, the provenance. It comes from the estate of Maurice Sendak of Wild Things fame!
