nice Grell pencils! A 13 year wait to share this though eh? 2012 is the same year Colorado legalized weed, so maybe that explains it!

This if fantastic!  Love the shadow.  And that classic Grell linework of course.  Definitely cover quality, or at the very least a T-shirt.  Does Mike own the license for this?  I had a Sable sketch once.  It was inked, but nowhere near as nice as this one (and not full figure).  I believe it was from 1984, the year after the First comic came out.  Like you, I also sold mine.  But unlike you, I never got the chance to get it back.  In fact, I don't think I've ever seen it resurface.  Anyway, congrats on this beauty.  And if you ever do get it on a T, put me down for an XL.

Yes, Mike still owns the license. Would love to see a well made movie someday :)

"First Comics had a 10 year publishing license for 3 years after they last published the book. My leaving the book was a way to hasten that time period instead of having to wait until that 10 year period was over, I knew that after I left the book they'd only be able to keep it going for a short period of time. And then I would get the rights back a few years after they ceased publication." - Mike Grell  2016 interview

Pencilled in a level of quality ready for publication!  Great heroic street level screen ready look of the 80's before everyone hit the gym.

Wonderful! One of the main reasons I dislike "single character-no background" commissions is because the character inevitable appears to be floating in a void, so they never feel as if they have any weight to them. But look at what a difference just having him appear to be stepping on his own signature, makes to the overall weight of the character. And just a bit of pencil smudging in the background gives the impression that there isa solid structure behind him. No more Negative or Phantom Zone!

Very cool Grell Sable, particularly how you were able to get it back while high, congrats!

Stunning sketch of Jon Sable Freelance by Mike Grell! It's really nicely detailed for a convention sketch. I love all the effort Mike put into this. Lots of intricate pencilwork. The multi-layered shadow works really well to give the piece some dimension! You say you got this 13 years ago?About time you posted it! Fabulous pick-up, congrats!
