Wagner, Matt - Grendel sketch (2004) (6x9)

Nice era of Wagner convention drawings when he'd have the color pencils on color paper.  He's go more dense or less depending on the need to show shine or shadow.

GREAT (ahem) "sketch" here, Indy, which feels (to my possibly faulty memory, at least) very reminiscent of the small run of Berni Mirault covers (which followed the Pander Bros. run) in the early days.  I know that was Brian and not Hunter as Grendel, but there's just something about the vibe of this that really throws back to those pieces for me...  Absolutely LOVE the texture and dimension Matt gives here, and the lighting and shadows around the edges of the white eye "patches" give the impression that they're embossed upon the black fabric.  Beautiful!  These colored pencil pieces of Matt's really were something special and you have two fantastic ones!  Mega congrats!
