Description
Forest Enchantment with Death of the Endless

by Richard Friend

Ink on comic board

11 x 17 in.

Not for Sale

Richard Friend has inked some of the biggest names in comics and you don't get those gigs unless you are a phenomenal illustrator in your own right. I've been following his IG for a while and been very impressed with the quality of his posts (and his song selection, which leans heavily toward the type of metal music that I also love).

I reached out a few months ago to commission him for my ongoing Death of the Endless project and having seen his strength at articulating cosmic events with a high degree of render, I asked him to place Death in an Enchanted Forest among animals that symbolize the afterlife or creation. From American Indigenous Folklore to Southeast Asian Spirituality we settled on Fox, Rabbit, and Deer. I requested some sort of overt mysticism, which the glow on the fawn conveys without committing to anything in particular. Has Death enchanted this beast? Are we witnessing a resurrection? Is this animal (and perhaps the entire group) a familiar, a herald or the magical manifestations of nature?

Whatever your interpretation, I am grateful to Richard for spending so many visible work hours on this lovely allegorical illustration.

Richard created a mesmerizing piece. The detail work is enchanting and the picture makes me thoughtful.

Great get!

Another stunner commission.

In addition to the highlights you mentioned, one element that stands out to me is the determined look on her face. Her gaze is directed at the deer with this look of concentration as she doing whatever it is she is doing.

Richard did an exceptional job (as expected)

Her face is full of intent for sure.

Oh, you know Freind was going to kill it on Death.  He shows that experience inking over those Wildstorm guys now comes in handy in the demanding illustrative style he puts into the commissions.

I think, given the very specific instructions you asked him to follow, that it turned out pretty great!

Very impressed by the commission/illustration pieces I've seen pop up out there by Richard and this is no different! It's clear he put a lot of time and effort into the piece for sure and I love what he did with the Forest elements (trees/greens/shrubs etc.) in the scene in addition to the Death figure and animals. congrats on the result!
