Description
15.5" x 18.5" oil on panel

Originally painted in 1996, and given the excessive title "the anguish of the night recedes before the slow bulb of research", later shortened to "Gargoyle" in recent years, this painting remains one of Hale's most recognized and iconic piece of work.

It has been published in numerous art books and books on art. It has been used as a book cover several times in multiple countries. And it has appeared as a limited studio print, on designer t-shirts and jackets, etc. I have seen countless art students post it and or their version of it over the last couple decades, as social media has become so prevalent. In fact, this painting is Phil Hale's own avatar/profile image on Instagram. Interestingly Phil chose to flip the image for print.

I had asked Phil a long long time ago what ever happened to a handful of pieces that I'd daydreamed about owning, and every one of them had been sold off ages ago to pay the rent. Of those, this was one I was most bummed about.

Until a few weeks ago, when it quietly popped up for sale, and I received one of those automated emails from CAF about items I have on a watchlist I set up nearly 2 decades ago. To put it frankly, 99.9% of those tend to be some art I am totally disinterested in, from some part of an artist's career before they made a name for themselves, or a con sketch, or the like.

But this time... THIS TIME... what I saw, I didn't believe was real at first.
Busted out one of my books and did an hour's studying the piece from a high res piece, vs the single softer for sale image, and just started matching things up. Once I was sure it had to be legit, and my brain was 100% consumed by fire, I simultaneously emailed the seller, and I sent the same image to Phil, expecting he would pick up on any inconsistencies, but to my surprise his response was simply "noooooo, where?"

And with that, I knew what I had to do.
So here it is. The painting Phil called "the unrepeatable piece."

It is a one and only that's is so uniquely Hale.  How can anyone capture this again?  The vulnerability and haunting stare are brightly lit in this all black environment that has this silent scream.

I saw this come through as well, but wasn't able to act as quickly.

Congrats on an amazing piece. It'll look amazing on the wall. Please post a pic when it is.

Appreciate it. I was truly afraid someone that pays attention would beat me to it while i was in the midst of my due dilligence. I already have the frame underway (I had some molding here at the house so I cut it down and made the frame myself) will post a pic when the glue is dry and the piece is hung.

Ha I was wondering who bought it. I got the email too but didn't see it till morning and was surprised it sold already. It was not a cheap piece, that said, definitely landed in the right collection. It is one of Phil's most iconic paintings, though will always be the Goad cover to me, congrats!

Thanks. And you can call me a loon, but I thought it was incredibly fair, and in fact, quite cheap for the prominence the painting still has in Phil's ovure.  What's more, the day I paid for it, I was informed that the seller had been offered $3k more than I'd paid for it to sell it to someone else, and they offered to put me in touch with that individual. So I guess I am not the only loony. :)
