DescriptionBeen a long time admirer of Kent's work through the years, but hadn't pulled the trigger on getting something from him until this year's SDCC. Scott at ASFA told me there was a list for the show, and I jumped at the opportunity. The request was easy... a samurai. No other specifics given, no discussion about size of the piece or anything... just the request.Believe it or not, but this was done at the show. I got a text from Scott saying it was done, so I went over to the booth, and was floored by the result. As always, scan doesn't do the piece justice, and it is a whopping 14x20 piece. Hopefully the large scan will show it off a little. Thanks to Scott for facilitating, and, of course, thanks to Kent for this stunning piece. Hope to do it again sometime soon. ;) Social/Sharing |

Kent's work is always outstanding. This samurai has the look and feel of the time period of years past. So awesome!

Super cool! It has just as many layers of paints and depth as his in studio paintings.

Yeah, I knew the draftsmanship would be fantastic based on his works and conversations I had with Allen in the past and with Scott earlier this year, but the amount of painting took it to the next level. Had no idea it would be that detailed, but couldn't be happier with the results. Appreciate the comments as always, Marcus!

Sublime Williams and incredible that he did this on site at the con. What a talent and what a nice piece of art. The only thing that surprises me about this is that it is not Sandman related!

Thanks Jeff! Nothing against Kent's Sandman related pieces he's done, but I have been always fascinated by Japanese culture and especially the samurai era - so it was a no brainer. Happy to diversify for a piece like this. :
Wish you were there to see it in person, but we'll make that happen the next time you come down south. :)

A master illustrated by a master - congrats! Amazing that he did this (and mine and others) at the show, I agree.

Thanks Malcolm. We'll need a hotel or studio option if we get something else from him. :) I'd be thrilled with it either way.

Thanks Chris! If it isn't up on the wall prior to OAX, I might pack it up so you can get a closer look. 😉 Hope all is well!

I can't even begin to tell you how envious this makes me. Some time back, I reached out to Kent and inquired about his artwork for the box cover of the Criterion Collection video of Toshiro Mifune's Rashomon. I think Kent has a real affinity for this genre and it shows in this brilliant painting. Congratulations you lucky, lucky, man.

Thanks Eric. I love the Roshomon cover art, and the other samurai works I have seen from Kent. I had seen the recent comic book related work he's done in recent years, and figured he would enjoy revisiting a genre that he seems genuinely passionate about. And, yep, I do consider myself very lucky... stars definitely aligned for this one. Take it easy!

Superb work by Kent Williams. Kent is a master painter and uses his paints to bring his subjects to life. Here he manages to create the impression that the samurai is actually looking back at us. I love his color palette and the depth that he creates in his work. This is a stunning commission. Serious congrats.
