Description

In the late 1950’s, renowned paleoanthropologist Louis Leakey was looking for a researcher to send on an expedition to study chimpanzees in Gombe National Park, Tanzania. He wanted someone who was both unhindered and untainted by the current prevailing scientific theories. So in 1960, impressed by nothing more than her passion, he chose to send his 26 year old British secretary. She had absolutely no field work training or experience, and had no scientific degree of any kind. Her name was Jane Goodall.

The Gombe expedition launched a career that lasted for almost seven decades and made Goodall the world’s foremost authority on chimpanzees. She spent the next 65 years advocating for chimpanzees, nature and wildlife conservation, climate change, and the environment. When she was well into her 70's, she was still travelling the world nearly 300 days a year on this mission. As a child, instead of a teddy bear, her father gave her a plush toy chimpanzee she named Jubilee. Jubilee still sits on Jane's dresser in London.

In April of 2020, I recorded a broadcast of National Geographic’s 2017 documentary JANE. As of this writing, it’s still on my DVR. I have never deleted it. Yes, I know it’s streaming on Disney+ and I can watch it any time I want. But I’ve just never felt comfortable with the idea of deleting it. And honestly, I just like the idea of it being there. Over the last 5 years, I’ve watched it several times. But never was a viewing as meaningful as it was tonight when I learned the news of her passing. I’ve been an animal lover for as long as I can remember. So of course Jane Goodall was one of my idols. Her passion and dedication have inspired millions around the globe. And I suspect will continue to do so for generations to come.

Dr. Jane Goodall passed away on October 1, 2025. On September 30, the day before she died, her final Instagram post featured a video of chimpanzees.

My thoughts, prayers, and heartfelt condolences to all her family, friends, and colleagues who mourn her loss.

Thank you so much for reaching out from your travels.  It's such an incredibly profound coincidence that you just happen to be in Tanzania when this happened.  To be able to celebrate Dr. Goodall's life and achievements in the place where it all began.  I can only imagine how moving and bittersweet these memories will be for you.  Have a safe journey home my friend.

From another animal lover to another, I too will watch that documentary. She did a lot where/when it counted.

I'm sure at some point a movie will be made about her life.  She will probably be portrayed by some pretty, young, actress.  Some factual liberties will be taken and some dramatizations will be created just so the movie can make money.  But nothing will match the real life story (or the real life passion and dedication).  Which is why the documentary is so special.  I don't know if you've ever seen it before, but I hope you enjoy it.  I'm quite sure you will.  Thanks for the comment my friend.

In these difficult and trying times, the world and the planet needs all the allies it can get.  We have lost one of its great, great, champions.  Thank you for the comment my friend.
