Description

First Comics 1990 classics illustrated, unused, original cover art by Tom Sutton. 20x30. This is a documented/planned to be used but unpublished Classics Illustrated Comic cover! It was likely to be the most intense book as no one had done it quite like this since Gustav Dore, and this is the only art so comparable from the 20th century, quite remarkable when you think about it, Sutton is a perfect fit for this "touchy subject matter" and does a bang up job, it's scary sure but when you know the story, it represents quite well. Basically Lucifer is rallying his army of fellow fallen angels in North Heaven prior to being banished to hell, where he makes the statement "Better to reign in Hell than serve in Heaven". The bad boy by which all other's are judged. From research I found, Barry Windsor Smith started the Paradise Lost project for First Comics in the late 1980's but it was never completed by the time this Sutton cover was finished, and soon after First folded. Apparently it's one of the great unfinished epics/legends in comic books.

Milton himself wouldn't have imagined this level of vision his words had to inspire such a sprawling and intense work!
