Very nice illo from a golden era of sci fi!  The ship design is like a airliner and rocket in one in a race to escape this meteor strike. Joe has the skills!

Hey what's up, I just saw a 1939 panel from the Superman strip and added it. I think it might be the smoking gun? lol

Great fantastical imagination.  A sci-fi space and underwater pin up with lots of background storytelling.  So early that you can't tell it's Mooney by the art style yet.  That plastic embossed label was a 70's thing and it's surprising that it hasn't fallen off yet.

I was just figuring out Namor is the son of a Sea Captain and a Mermaid, I wonder if these aren't his parents. The mermaid seems interested in the diver and he is looking her way. lol Fish grow fast! I have far more respect and interest in Jim Mooney knowing about this early period I wonder what else is out there from this time.

Very nice illustration to inform us of how the regular folk would dress and behave in their time period.  It would be nice to make a print of this just to recreate their long lost pamphlet style of cartoon storytelling.

That's a really good idea!

This could be a prelim for Bard III which i just posted in my gallery recently. Take a look.  At first I thought this prelim  only shows a man "vanquishing" sea monsters. But to the left, at waist level to the man it looks like the helmet the lady warrior wears. She may be either crouching down or pinned against the side of the boat by the monsters. In any case this is a very nice piece! I love preliminaries as they document the miriad of ideas the artist was playing with. If I see anymore possibilities for what this is a prelim of I'll add those as comments as well.

I checked out Bard iii and by golly, I think you are right! & by the way, you have great taste! I see you have a lot of interesting works of art. Thank you and great to meet you!

Fun tribute!  I like he's carrying the briefcase.  Maybe he's now a lawyer who can sell his licensing rights to Dark Horse and Titan away from Marvel.

This was done back 30+ years ago by an artist who may have worked for Marvel and possibly on the Conan series as well. Possibly Val Mayerik or Frank Brunner.

WOW - I have to admit that I'd never seen this O'Barr piece before, it's amazing. He channels a little Bowie influence here with Jonny Zero and his depth of color is almost mesmerizing. Thank you for sharing something I'd never seen before!

The pleasure is mine, thank you! Both the B&W and Color versions came together, however it was thought the colored was a colored print of the B&W. We saw James at a Boston Con and he borrowed the art because he didn't have a good scan for historical/republication possibilities? And signed the pieces. It is also signed on the back, the year he signed it. The copyright reflects the original date he drew them.

....is it a meteor shower or is it something, like a planet exploding and the ship is escaping? Hmmm.....lol

He was great SciFi illustrator.  This is a great painting and may very well have been a retort to a-hole comments like this:

The Encyclopedia of Science Fiction found Valigursky's work to be "perfectly suited for the space operas and futuristic melodramas [of Ace Books]" and praised his depictions of robots and "his characteristic needle-nosed spaceships", but faulted those of his images that "focus on human figures" as "less interesting", concluding that although "Valigursky cannot be regarded as a great sf artist, (...) his distinctive style will always be fondly associated with the simple pleasure of reading unambitious, unpretentious space adventures."

I agree 100% Thanks for lookking!
