One Bad Apple:

Snow White & Death of the Endless

By Senescence

Colored pencils on A3 illustration board

Not for Sale

My second commission from Australian medical illustrator, Senescence is a mash-up of Death and Snow White, bringing together my two favorite characters —from The Endless and from Fables. There is an element of Snow Glass Apples with Death bearing some resemblance to Bebe Neuwirth who voiced the Queen in the Seeing Ear Theater radio play adaptation that benefit the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund. Facially there is definitely some Kat Dennings, who voiced Death for the Sandman Audiobook. And in the hairstyle it's easy to see a bit of Beetlejuice's Lydia Deetz, giving this multiple goth pedigree.

Snow White is in many ways the antithesis of Death. She is resurrected innocence incarnate: a pagan cross between both Christ and the Virgin Mary, but publicly predating both in the earliest Roman source of "Chione" (Snow) from Ovid's Latin epic Metamorphoses. By the time "Sneewittchen" was translated from Low German by the Brothers Grimm, it had taken on mythic elements of druidic cultures and even Grail Lore.

Philosophically and somewhat linguistically, the opposite of chastity is carnality, and sensual climax is known poetically in French as "the little death."

That balance between Death and Resurrection must appeal to my Libran nature, and I like how Senescence has made similar the facial features without actually twinning the two ladies. I also like the abscence of a hard edge, which implies to me an element of phantasmagoria. Are they two distinct entities or two aspects of the same?

Gorgeous work! The colors are off the chart and the eyes staring directly at the viewer are really causing an impact. Congrats!

You really like Natalie Portman.  Maybe I got you pegged.  But I don't know what to do with tossed salads and scrambled eggs.

Until you mentioned it I didn't even make the connection to Natalie Portman, but holy cow —Snow White really does look like her!

So many elements I love about this piece. The eye is immediately drawn to the stunning beauty of both figures. Once you've drunk in enough of that to feel intoxicated, you can pull back a bit. It's then you see that Senescence has framed these beauties with the mess and detail that is Death's hair and the very loose suggestion of Snow's outfit.

I dont know if it's the beauty of Senecense's art or your loquacious descriptions, but I'm compelled to write a comment consisting of something a bit more than "Nice!".

Holy shit! I'm so taken aback at your multi-sentence comment that I'm going to honor you by not taking any attention away from it with my own comment. Suffice it to say, this is SUBLIME!

Fables & Sandman go together like Vertigo cereal and milk! This is a very beautiful piece that has a fine/finished painted feel, hard to believe it's only colored pencils! awesome work by the artist. congrats!

Stunning image! Love the concept and execution. The tones used really pop and the look of Death and Snow White are sinister and alluring, respectively
