Mel Milton - Phoenix

Mel posted this piece to his Instagram shortly before NYCC '25, and I have been eyeing it ever since. I made a dash to his table on Thursday of the 'con to snatch it up. In recent years, all the Scott/Jean art was gone in minute one, so I didn't spare any time. Mel was incredibly kind as I thumbed through his portfolio looking for this one and only. I got pretty distracted because Mel was so sweet about my cosplay and even asked for a photo. Once I got to Phoenix in the book, he let me know a commissioner was deciding between her and a couple of his other pieces. He asked me to check back later. I came back on Saturday in a different cosplay, and Mel knew it was me right away, which was impressive. We chatted again and took another photo; he's really, really sweet. Phoenix was still there, and I was so happy to grab this piece.

I love that Mel blends his animated and comic styles while also giving the ladies more realistic curvy body types. I was drawn to this piece because Phoenix is typically shown with her powers in full force, flames, the phoenix bursting forth, and this piece was the opposite. It's an intimate moment, a real moment, demure even. I love the pout and the closed eyes. Her bright red hair is also a nice contrast to the green and gold. Overall, a strong statement piece that speaks volumes while appearing very soft and quiet.
