Arthur Adams (and friends) - Tales From The Crypt - Jiangshi Demoness

If major thanks were in order for the Godzilla body addition to my sketch cover posted yesterday, than Extreme Gratitude is warranted for this incredible commission by Arthur.

This began as a sort of spur of he moment idea I had a couple of days before NYCC. I scanned in some old EC comics and did some additional work in Photoshop and Illustrator to create mock-up covers for imaginary Tales From The Crypt and Haunt Of Fear covers. Since those covers had areas on the side showcasing EC’s horror hosts it seemed perfect for a jam piece.

I showed Arthur one of them early on Thursday and left the page with him, not sure if he’d have time or not to get to it. Thankfully, as with the Godzilla, my friend Ankur would be in Baltimore the following weekend to pick it up if Arthur was able to get to it in during the week. And yes! It all worked out. We didn’t discuss any character, I just left it up to him to come up with something appropriate for the cover; I knew it would be in (literally) good hands. What an amazing character design! It appears this lovely lady is a Jiangshi, from Chinese folklore. Basically a walking/hopping corpse, or Chinese Vampire and the tag/talisman on her forehead is placed there to immobilize them..but that’s maybe not really important to know all that or if it really applies here…she might have those visual attributes but she can be whatever you want! I’ll call her Necronomica - The Jiangshi Priestress!

In addition to Arthur’s amazing drawing, along the side we have Dave Johnson providing The Crypt-Keeper, Andrew Robinson’s Vault-Keeper and Frank Cho’s Old Witch! All of this came together within one week, basically. Crazy how it all worked out but I am so happy it did. A very favorite piece in the collection.
