Description

This is my first "original" comic art piece, acquired directly from Willingham himself at a small Houston fan convention in 1986. After informing Bill that I was an Elementals fan, he asked which was my favorite character; and of course I said Fathom. So, he gave me this. The figure is not actually original art, but a photocopy. Guess I must have looked disappointed that he wasn't going to sketch anything, so Bill and Rus Sever (from Shuriken, who was sitting there) proceeded to hand-color it. I can't remember if they used colored pencil or crayon, but I was pretty excited when they finished up and signed it. Fathom was pinned to the wall of my room for years, and the paper got a bit of a suntan. Recently found folded in half amongst various other old odds and ends.

There were definitely instances early on when I collected where an artist didn't want to sketch and I kind of lost interest in their comics.  Some even said, I'm not drawing because "I'm not caught up with the list I took from a different convention", which pissed me off even more.  Hopefully it wasn't a negative experience for you and at least you kept this filed away with Rus Sever saving the day.

I recall being a bit overwhelmed and tongue-tied by the experience of meeting *the* Bill Willingham -- who had created such inspiring art for my favorite TSR / D&D modules, etc..  Probably didn't even know he was going to be there; I just showed up because my local comic shop said it would be a fun event.  So, there were no real expectations; I certainly didn't have any money to actually purchase any real art; and in the end, I was happy to go home with this cool piece and a good memory.

From one Big Willingham Elementals fan to another, Congrats! I also met Bill in 1986 at a local Long Island Comic Show and got my first con sketch from him then. I asked for Ratman from the series, and I think he was charging $25 back then. I still have the piece, it's in my gallery.
