DescriptionI am very excited to FINALLY have a nice page from Hulk #141 in my little collection of Hulk art- I have been looking for one for 25 years!!!Having just been separated from Jarella and true happiness, Incredible Hulk 141 page 2 opens with a great sequence of the Hulk lamenting the loss of his love. The story then shifts to Bruce Banner's love interest, Betty, who has been transformed to crystal, setting the stage for the introduction of Doc Samson tasked by General Ross to save her. This page also features Doc Samson's very first spoken words in the Marvel universe... "Perhaps not, General-- Major Talbot-- but believe me-- IT'S TRUE!" Although we don't actually see Doc Samson (a character I always loved) as the suspense builds to his reveal on the next page, it's kind of cool to have his first words! In addition to the excellent Hulk images, I just love Herb Trimpe's cinematic visual storytelling throughout this entire page, zooming in and out to shift the focus from the Hulk to the plane. Also love how Trimpe used perspective lines to lead the viewer directly to Betty in the final panel. John Severin's beautifully detailed inks were the perfect compliment to Trimpe's pencils and strong compositions- the pair was my all-time favorite Hulk art team! Hulk 141 was the third Hulk comic book I bought off the racks, and it was also later republished in the Hulk's Marvel Treasury Edition #5 and the Herb Trimpe IDW Artist Select Series hardcover. I'm very happy to have a great page from one of my all-time favorite Hulk comics!!! Social/Sharing |

Probably the second most important character to be introduced in Hulk's own title for many decades until Rocket Racoon's ascent. It was always a key issue to be found and getting a page from it is many more times gratifying of a feeling.

Thanks, Marcus! Yeah, second to the Wolverine, but most characters would be second to that guy!

That's a great page from a great issue! The last panel really sticks in my mind, seeing poor Betty trapped in her crystal form. Looking at that panel now, it's clearer how cleverly composed it is - pushing her into the background makes her seem more distant and lost. The twin three-panel progressions in the top two tiers are nicely done too. It's always hard to know what should count as a 'first appearance'. In comics, it isn't uncommon for the word balloons, or a shadowy figure to appear 'first' before the big reveal. Either way, this is a really cool page.
