Live Wire by Jeff Moy

I won this piece off of eBay ages ago, for a fantastic price. If memory serves, I was actually sitting in the middle of a structural geology lecture at the time, and had to nonchalantly open eBay on my laptop so I could place my bid (definitely glad those days are behind me). I've been wanting to share it for ages, but was of course limited by my notoriously tiny scanner.

I own a good body of unpublished work by Jeff at this point, but this piece is unique for a few reasons! First off, it's a full-body pose, while most of Jeff's commission-style pieces these days are only torso shots, and secondly, it's on an 11x17 board, while Jeff normally uses 9x12 or 11x14.

I do love my 11x17-sized pinup pieces. You get all that space dedicated to rendering the character in as much detail as possible! Jeff went with a strong pose and cocky smile for Live Wire, here, which captures the essence of his character perfectly. I'm always happy when artists remember to include the Legion flight ring, and Garth is almost showing his off, along with his lightning powers. Jeff's always had a great approach for drawing Garth's cybernetic arm, too - even in black and white, you can tell that it's a metal core encased in glass (or some other 30th-century transparent material). A piece this large is also perfect to showcase one of my favourite little staples of Jeff's art: he includes realistic folds in the superhero costumes he draws, just enough to remind you that the costume is, in fact, fabric, and so does tend to bunch up and crease in places.
