Description
14 x 17, drawn and painted with acrylics by Paul Pope on a single sheet of film positive. No pen and ink original exists.

Continuing the upload of my final few 2025 pieces to CAF. This is a fun one and a timely complement to the long-awaited release of the collected THB, Paul Pope's 1990s era series set on Mars that features the adventures of HR Watson and her robot bodyguard. It was a memorable cover from the issue Paul put together to fill the gap of THB stories between the first series and its eventual continuation. It was also later included in Pope’s art book, Pulp Hope (see additional images).

I was very tempted by the piece from the moment I saw it included in Paul Pope's 2025 exhibition at Philippe Labaune Gallery in New York City. I hemmed and hawed, however, because I assumed there was a pen and ink original. However, after conferring with the gallery, they assured me that this piece was all Pope, who drew and colored with acrylics directly on a film positive.

Pope color pieces are rare and, while I gravitate toward his pen and ink work, I consider this one of the most fun and memorable renderings of series protagonist HR Watson. Happy to add this to my collection and looking forward to readers experiencing (or re-experiencing) Pope's early masterwork.

Fantastic color piece and even cooler that it was on display at his show.

How does a comment last for cover?
How can a story never die?
Art is love we must hold onto
Never easy, but we buy
Sometimes our Horsey Press captured
Somehow, our time Parade stands still
Love lives on inside our arts and always will

Minutes turn to HR, days to years then gone
But when all else has been for Watson
Still Labaune lives on

Maybe some moments weren't so armpits
Maybe some galleries art so sweet
But we have to know some bad times
Or our lines are THB
Then then the shadows cover paint us
Just when we feel Paul Pope is gone
We'll hear our song and know once more
Our love Labaune

Wow, done completely with paints, huh? Very nice, and it trips me out when I think he was already working 30 years ago! Congrats on picking this up, Mark!

Yup. The gallery even sent me a video that shows the piece from a side angle.

That's a beauty. Paul didn't do many color pieces but what he did do were great. Shame he doesn't colore more of his comics, cause IMO he is the best for his work. No one has really quite  fit with his style.

YES.  Just yesyesyesyesyes.  An indelible piece of Pope history (I remember exactly where I was when my copy of this issue arrived and my eyes saw this image for the first time) that is -SO- completely striking with it's odd purple background and the armpit... :)  It felt like such a huge gap between issues at the time (which was, of course, NOTHING compared to the wait getting a reprint collection :) ), and I remember feeling a bit shocked by the vibrant energy that was coursing off the cover when I first saw it (thanks to Paul's "cutie pie" style).  Just so different from everything else on the stands at the time. It took a bit for my brain to dive into and dig and process it all, but it was fun feeling Paul pushing me around like that with this cover.  A beautiful add to your gallery, Mark, and YES, FINALLY, a long-overdue THB reprint book!  Such an incredible add: a published THB piece!!  Really, really special - so cool!  Huge congrats, Mark!
