Description
11x17 cover to Hellboy in Hell #5, "The Three Gold Whips," published by Dark Horse Comics in 2013

I recently re-read the Mignola Hellboy stories, which cemented my desire to acquire a Hellboy piece. But which one? The baseline for a Mignola Hellboy is "very, very good" but I wanted one that was closer to “great” than good. It had to have a certain depth and density of composition and connect to the story in the issue. Dedicated Hellboy art appreciators know that not all Hellboy in Hell covers match these criteria. This one, however, fit the brief to a tee.

I love all eras of Hellboy art but I lean slightly toward the final Hellboy in Hell stories. Yes, Hellboy looked like he was skipping delt days at the BPRD gym but Mignola's art never looked more refined and suited to the story he was trying to tell. He simplified his art to the point that every figure and environment is suggested through the interplay of black and white shapes. Others have made the point, but it takes a lot of skill to subtract lines rather than add them, and Mignola has that skill in abundance.

It’s hard to call Mignola an indie creator but few comics storytellers have executed such a sustained personal vision for as long as he has while still retaining ownership of the characters and their stories. He's a true world-builder and I’m thrilled to add this example of his genius to my collection.

Any Mignola fits in with any discerning collection.  Mignola carried the torch for indie creators in the 00's with Hellboy finding success that carried over into other forms of media while still retaining the character's core tennents.  He didn't sell out, he sold up.

Congrats Mark! It's a wonderful example imo. And I guess my collection has been downgraded, to non-discerning. Thanks Marcus.

A stupendous acquisition and addition to your collection, Mark! But, broad shoulders? Those are about the narrowest shoulders I've ever seen. On anyone! Some might even say he doesn't appear to HAVE shoulders! But congrats again, and also to you, Jason, for making the sale! Not that it was ever in doubt....

Stop the insanity, RdC! Clearly, this version of the character had skipped his regular delt workouts. I was trying to distinguish between two eras of Mignola Hellboy art (the broad and skinny-shouldered eras). I'll try to do better.

Anyway, watch Rubén's weekly Sunday YouTube show

This is fabulous (though at this stage, I'm not sure Mignola qualifies as an indy artist anymore).
