Description

On the left hand page, Kurjak is attacked by a horde of toy soldiers:

“I can't believe my eyes. The goldsmith's tiny creations are animated, and they sting! But they don't seem big enough or fast enough to worry me, even though I'm naked as a jaybird. I have to find something to keep them at bay, or maybe even smash them to pieces…” (A ghoul reaches out of a painting to immobilize him.) “Ah! Dammit! No! It can't be! Aah!” (A tiny archer shoots a crossbow dart into his neck.)

At the same time on the right hand page, at Vyšehrad, the ancient fortress of the Bohemian kings, Caleb and Harlan arrive in a flash of light:

(Harlan) “How... how did we get here, Caleb?”

“The quickest way possible, my friend. By air...”

“I've never done that before. I'm dizzy...”

“Concentrate, Harlan. Use your Dampyr power. Only you can determine if there's a Master of the Night nearby.”

“Sorry. If Nergal is here, he's not in corporeal form. Or we'll only find his servant Sonderling.” (But we know Sonderling is elsewhere, tormenting Kurjak in Sombre's workshop.)

“Guide me to the entrance to Nergal's secret slaughterhouse.”

Note Caleb's angel wings fading from view.

See the discussion in the comments about "naked as a jaybird," which is literally "naked as a worm."

These Liliputians are a prickly bunch.  The ghouly guy ought to keep Kurjak busy while they mount up for an assault on his cave of no return.

"Naked as a worm"- hadn't heard that expression before. I've heard of "naked as a jaybird". Hmmm, worm.... jaybird.... now I know where the expression "The early bird gets the worm" comes from ;)

 Finally, here comes the cavalry!

In fact, "naked as a jaybird" would be a better idiomatic English translation, so I'll make that alteration.  This made me wonder where that idiom came from. Apparently it was originally "naked as a fledgeling," sometimes appended with "fledgeling robin" or "fledgeling jaybird," and over time the "fledgeling" part was dropped. "Naked as a fledgeling" makes more sense, if you've ever seen newly hatched birds.

I'd like to book a 5 day Air BnB stay at Vyšehrad, wow! I love that exterior establishing shot of the fortress to open pg. 81.
