Description
When Dave Johnson was announced as a guest at my local convention in 2022, I was super excited. He’s also an artist I have always followed from his humble beginnings at DC on Chain Gang War to Super Patriot for Erik Larsen before he moved on to be one of the best and more instantly recognizable cover artists in comics. He was also a member of the Gaijin Studio which rassembled many of my favorite artists in comics. Plus, I'd heard that the Reverend is also quite the outspoken personality, so I knew I’d be in for interesting conversations.

Getting in contact with him was not super easy. I tried his rep’ but when that did not seem to go as fluidly as expected, I dug an old email address that had for Dave when he used to sell his own sketched sketchbooks on ebay at the dawn of History. Which worked.

I had to go for a Black Panther as I knew Dave’s minimalistic and very graphic approach could do wonder on the character.

And I was certainly not disappointed. Dave’s rendition of a very mysterious and dangerous on the hunt BP is great in a very classic sense but let’s be honest, this piece is an obvious team up between BP and that fantastic tree is standing on. The various techniques of inking and feathering he used on it, to depict foliage and shadows are delightful.

As regards pure design, I love how Dave centred BP within the piece with the moon and hangings vines curving beside him.

Dave told me he had a blast doing (he kept tinkering with it during the show) that one and that was reflected in his asking price.

Thanks for the great conversations, your presence and your talent Mr Reverend 😉

You would be able to see the elephant he drew behind the tree if only elephants were not so dam good at hiding.

Nice. I prefer his color work but his black and white chops are pretty impressive.

The Johnson composition always rocks!  The angle of the tree slashes through the piece and allows it and the halo moon in the back to place the focus on Black Panther's prowling stance.

Reminds me of the Sahnna cover by Frank Cho at CAF Live this past weekend. A bit less cleavage, but very sexy still!

Ooh, why have you been hiding this little gem? As I often say when someone posts art by him, though I say it in different words, this is yet another example of what makes Reverend Dave the Master of the Graphic Arts!

Underrated and frequently undervalued in the hobby. He is a modern master!

The tree is an equal partner with BP in this piece for sure, and he looks so cool posing on it (which in real life at that angle/slope and pose would require some serious core strength!). Great piece!

Great piece. Big fan of Dave's work and aforementioned personality. His old Cover Hi-Lo was blog was hysterical.

Nice!  A great counterpoint to the J. Bone piece you just posted, F M, whose power resides in the explosive energy and drama of the Panther unleashed... but this one is all about stillness and regal majesty of the King of Wakanda.  Nothing moves here - not even the air....  It wouldn't dare.  Love the composition, too, as the tree adds a really interesting (and phenomenally rendered) frame for the Panther to sit in, brilliantly offset by the trace of moon (just enough!) in the background.  Fantastic!  Congrats, F M!
