DescriptionBefore the CAF show that made these pages available I was discussing the pages with a friend and I pointed out this page as an example that I particularly liked. I was tickled pink to be able to subsequently snag this stellar specimen of sublime storytelling. The page works really well without words and the pacing and layout are perfect. Simone also uses alternating styles of exposure to move the story beats along naturally. Starting the story with Blink brings to mind the fantastic opening sequence to the Days of Future Past film, and this page nicely captures her using her powers. In the first panel we see the fiendish eyes in the black, and then in the next panel we get a gorgeous explosion of glass - just look at how Simone rendered out all those shards - unreal. As we move down we get to see examples of Simone's incredible cityscapes, a skill he honed with Gotham during his Batman and Robin run. Skulls, devil dogs, devastation, and non-stop action. I couldn't be happier. Thanks as always to Matt and Simone. Social/Sharing |

Strong contrasts between the clean lines and white body of Blink, and the solid black and sophisticated shading of the background buildings, really keeps the eye on the action.

Wow, that's a stunning composition!! Light and dark in all the right places, and that third panel is the money shot, as far as I'm concerned - good gravy! Before opening a book called "X-Men of the Apocalypse Alpha", I'd wager some readers might have a preconceived notion (subconscious or no) of how that book will start, and this page 1 is -exactly right- and -absolutely better- than that at the same time. Beautifully staged and impeccably, wondrously rendered, Simone is obviously all-in, and to end up snagging the piece that your outstanding eye picked out at the get-go...? Well, that's winning, pal (regardless of how many devil dogs are on your heels. :) ).
