Description
Hollingsworth (1928-2000) was one of the first Black comics artists, working for Joseph Biro and other publishers starting in the mid-40s, when he was still in High School at Music and Arts in New York. By the 1950s he had taken over the long-running Scorchy Smith strip, which he drew (and wrote, as far as I can tell) in 1953 and 1954. Soon after this, he left comics to focus on painting and teaching.
In this daily, he's stretching out his story-telling techniques, dispensing with panel borders and using abstract shapes as the only background element, serving both as indicators of cast shadow and as design elements in the absence of panels.
