Description

This was my variant cover for the IDW series of Usagi Yojimbo. NEC did an exclusive, and we were able to put The Tick on the cover with Usagi. I had a pitch for doing the crossover. When I met with Stan at San Diego, he was thrilled with the cover and signed it for me.

This cover was heavily influenced by Hokusai. If you look at the background, you'll see a lot of the stylistic approaches to nature that I tried to honor. There was a gigantic exhibit at the MFA in Boston a number of years ago, and it really inspired me.

It was fun. I had to put a nod to Paul the Samurai in it. His status as a private eye from the Sean Wang era of The Tick comics featured prominently in my pitch for potential book.

Love the Tick! Love Usagi! Just a great idea and beautifully done! The only thing that could have made it better was if a piece of the French bread was falling off with an action line to Usagi's blade.

Thank you Jason! Talked to Stan about a Tick/Usagi crossover issue at SDCC the year this came out, but he said he was too busy at the time. Maybe one day!
