Wow amazing cover Peter! Enjoyed watching you talking about this piece on Ruben's show tonight. Love how the scene is framed by the perspective of the enemy and looming danger. It really drives the suspense; It really makes me want to read this issue! Major congrats on an amazing acquisition! Happy New Year!
Thanks, David. The CAF description should have been my script for the show but I forgot to use it! I would have done a much better job with it. I'd be interested in what you think of the stories. The only story in the book that's just ok is the John Severin one. That said, it's John Severin art! Overall I agree with Timothy Finney that the Make War No More era was the best.
Kubert knows how to frame a story. He undercuts the hubris of Easy
Company by putting them in danger, thus fulfilling the part about not bringing glamor to war. This was about the time when public sentiment turned against war too making the editorial direction even more impactful.
Thanks, Marcus! It's ironic that this peak in DC war stories coincided with the antiwar protests and public sentiment against the Vietnam War. I was about to write that it was the peak time of the art, but the '50s and '60s art was also tremendous.
Great tension in a Kubert cover as per his usual when War comics were concerned.
Thanks, FM! I agree! His output of excellent art was amazing - four or so covers plus a story every month plus editing and duties as director of publications.
Enjoyed your reveal with Ruben. Nice to be able to get up close here! Congrats.
Thanks, Duke. I'm looking forward to your interview with Rubén! I now know who the character Duke Fleed is!
Tremendous.
Thanks, Ryan! Happy New Year to you and your family!
Killer Kubert!
Thanks, Rick! Nice alliteration!
...wow!
Thanks, Damon! Happy New Year!
You are most welcome Peter! Happy New Year!
They are all there looking down at you
And they’re planning to shoot you
Look up now Easy Company
Don’t let them take you so easily
Keep your eyes on the skies
Don't look down on the shadow town, look up
Thanks, Miki! Perfect and apropos! New Year rings in stars of DC war comics!
You are the only one who deserved to land this cover. From a special issue and now in the proper collection. Nicely done Peter! Very happy for you.
Thanks, Lee! It has a place of honor as the first page in the war portfolio!
Gorgeous. Such a great composition, and so bold to have main character so small on a cover - and still produce something so eye-catching.
Thanks, Paul! Excellent comments!
Brilliaant Kubert cover. Obtaining the cover art to your favorite DC War comic issue is no small feat. Huge congrats, Peter!
Thanks, Kavi! Thanks for the many kind comments on CAF!
Nice Kubert Cover ! Congrats!
Thanks, Robert! You have fab Kuberts showing his development as artist! A 1946 page!!
Killer Kubert! I really want to add a Sgt. Rock cover to my mix...but I'm still looking for the right one. Congratulations!
Thanks, John! Happy New Year! I'm sure the one you get will be amazing!
Wow Peter! Congrats! Everything one could want in a Kubert War cover. The framing is super intense. Such menace!
Thank you, ML! It's a grail of a grail. Your comment made me aware of how Kubert also often uses a device--in this case the grenades in the right bottom corner--to help frame the cover, guide the eye, and accentuate the danger to Rock and Easy Company.
Despite I don't collect it, I love War Comics art. This one is superb. Excellent cover , masterfully drawn!
Thank you, Toni! A good way to start the new year!
Awesome vintage cover!
Thanks, Michael! Your cover gallery is amazing!
Great one! I love Kubert's surprise hidden enemy covers
Thanks, TJ! Your Kubert cover is fabulous!
Sweet cover that has found its perfect home - that is always cool! Congrats - I'll have to keep an eye out for this comic per your excellent description!
Thanks, Mark! Appreciate the kind words!
Fantastic multi-plane cover! It's fascinating to see how such a complex design still retains the power punch required for an eye-catching cover! But, then, Joe Kubert is a master in composition and cinematics...
Thanks, Al! Your Rock Doe page is an exemplar of Kubert's storytelling!
Great pick up peter. No matter how many times Kubert used this perspective with his war books, it always elecited a concerned response from the readers. As if we wanted to somehow notify the protagonist of the danger.
Thanks, Lee! Excellent point!
No one did war comics better than Joe Kubert!
beautiful cover buddy
