Description
"War Story." Cover date February 1972. Although the stat labels it as #240 January, it ran as #241 February.

Our Army at War #241 is my favorite DC war comic, which is why I have a separate gallery of panel pages from the issue. In addition to the exemplary Kubert cover, it has two evocative classics with Russ Heath and Alex Toth art. Rest of the book ain't bad either...

The cover is classic Kubert. Kubert frames the cover with Nazi soldiers menacing Rock and Easy Company. The Nazi's elbow and submachine gun focus the eye on Rock.

The cover story is a moving Ernie Pyle War Is Hell tale by veteran DC war writer Robert Kanigher with Heath's compelling layouts and precise pencils and inks. An old newspaper reporter--based on famous war reporter Ernie Pyle--accompanies Rock and his squad on a patrol for a story he is writing. Every time the squad comes under fire, a soldier who saves the squad with his bravery is tragically killed by enemy fire. The story ends with the reporter throwing away his notebook. Wind blows the pages, which are blank except for one with the words "WAR IS HELL!"

Next, "Dirty Job" set in Roman times is my favorite Alex Toth war story, despite ancient war comics stories not being my cup of tea. I had no idea where the story was going when I first read it, turned the page, and surprise ending...no spoilers here! And Toth did it in four pages.

What else do you want in a DC war book? Battle Album DPS and USS Stevens story! This book has both, an "atomic" Glanzman Battle Album and his Stevens tale "Batmen." The latter isn't a Dark Knight story but four action-packed pages of the USS Stevens dropping depth charges and throwing up a curtain of ack ack (antiaircraft) fire against a Japanese sub and batmen--Navy slang for kamikaze pilots. His USS Stevens stories are compelling because he drew on his war service aboard the Stevens.

Plus there's art by the incredible John Severin of EC Two-Fisted Tales fame and, of course, a Kanigher and Kubert story that is, alas, a reprint. That reprint, however, takes the reader through close calls of a pilot, frogman, and GI in the air, under the sea, and on the ground.

The book wraps up with the classic logo, MAKE WAR NO MORE. Here's what Kubert recalled about the logo (The Comics Journal #172, November 1994):

(Gary) GROTH: You mentioned the “Make War No More” blurb which started appearing in the DC books in the late ’60s or early ’70s ...

KUBERT: That’s when I took over the editorial reins. I was the one who directed that “Make War No More” be included on every story.

GROTH: Is that because you felt strongly about not glamorizing war?

KUBERT: Yes. Kanigher’s stories weren’t glamorizing war. We had discussed that many times. What we were trying to do was to get down to basics. That is, do stories about people who were in a wartime setting, not because they liked it, not because they enjoyed it, but because they were required to be there.

Wow amazing cover Peter! Enjoyed watching you talking about this piece on Ruben's show tonight. Love how the scene is framed by the perspective of the enemy and looming danger. It really drives the suspense; It really makes me want to read this issue! Major congrats on an amazing acquisition! Happy New Year!

Thanks, David. The CAF description should have been my script for the  show but I forgot to use it! I would have done a much better job with it. I'd be interested in what you think of the stories. The only story in the book that's just ok is the John Severin one. That said, it's John Severin art! Overall I agree with Timothy Finney that the Make War No More era was the best.

Kubert knows how to frame a story.  He undercuts the hubris of Easy
Company by putting them in danger, thus fulfilling the part about not bringing glamor to war.  This was about the time when public sentiment turned against war too making the editorial direction even more impactful.

Thanks, Marcus! It's ironic that this peak in DC war stories coincided with the antiwar protests and public sentiment against the Vietnam War. I was about to write that it was the peak time of the art, but the '50s and '60s art was also tremendous.

Great tension in a Kubert cover as per his usual when War comics were concerned.

Thanks, FM! I agree! His output of excellent art was amazing - four or so covers plus a story every month plus editing and duties as director of publications.

They are all there looking down at you
And they’re planning to shoot you
Look up now Easy Company
Don’t let them take you so easily
Keep your eyes on the skies
Don't look down on the shadow town, look up

Gorgeous. Such a great composition, and so bold to have main character so small on a cover - and still produce something so eye-catching.

Thank you, ML! It's a grail of a grail. Your comment made me aware of how Kubert also often uses a device--in this case the grenades in the right bottom corner--to help frame the cover, guide the eye, and accentuate the danger to Rock and Easy Company.

Fantastic multi-plane cover! It's fascinating to see how such a complex design still retains the power punch required for an eye-catching cover! But, then, Joe Kubert is a master in composition and cinematics...

Great pick up peter. No matter how many times Kubert used this perspective with his war books, it always elecited a concerned response from the readers. As if we wanted to somehow notify the protagonist of the danger.
