Description
Offered here is an original piece of artwork of Batman and Robin (head shots) by Batman's creator Bob Kane, done in ball-point pen on a Casa de Pico napkin. In the summer of 1978, the Old Town Circle Gallery held a one man showing of Kane's original artwork from opening night on July 27 that continued through August 27, 1978. This gallery show was running in conjunction with the San Diego Comic Convention (SDCC), being held at the El Cortez Hotel (last time at that venue) from July 26-30. Bob Kane was one of the guests of honor at the SDCC that year. On the morning of July 29, 1978 my family went down to the Old Town Circle Gallery to look at Bob's original artwork and met him there in person. Consequently, we all went out to lunch at Case de Pico and Bob did this quick sketch at the table, which reads "7/29/1978 To Mike Bob Kane." I was an eye witness to Bob drawing this piece, so its authenticity is beyond any doubt.

The napkin itself measures approx. 8.5" x 8.5" and is in unused excellent condition - no food residue. The actual drawing measures approx. 5.5" x 3.5" with a very bold and clean Kane signature. Note that the napkin is attached at its top edge to the matte with adhesive.

At this time, Case de Pico was a famous Mexican restaurant located in Old Town State Park San Diego (founded by Diane Powers in 1971), a key part of the Bazaar del Mundo - an eclectic collection of shops and restaurants that captured the spirit and ambiance of Mexico and was known for its vibrant atmosphere and award-winning food and soon becoming a beloved spot for Mexican cuisine.

The third image displays the original Invite for Bob Kane's Special showing of his original artworks at the Old Town Circle galley, with Barbara Cox acting as the Gallery Director. The invite is not included in this offering.
