Description
Origin and first appearance of Monark Starstalker. Okay, so he's not exactly an A list Marvel character, but this was a cool story with some great art by Howard Chaykin. After this issue, the character disappeared for 30+ years, finally appearing again in 2009 in a Nova story by Guardians writers Abnett and Lanning. He's had a few subsequent appearances since then in Wolverine: The Best There Is, Marvel Comics 1000 and Deadpool. More notably, this comic book cover had a brief cameo appearance in the Big Hero 6 movie in 2014 when one of the characters was shown reading it. This story was recently reprinted by Fantagraphics in the Lost Marvels No. 2: Howard Chaykin Vol. 1 book, also featuring Dominic Fortune and the Phantom Eagle.

I've had this cover art for quite a while, but recently had some restoration work done on it including creation of stats. The art was in somewhat rough shape as it looks like Marvel staff had cut out the main figure to make the corner box art and then cut and pasted elements back onto another board. Some of the pieces were coming apart and needed reinforcement. Anyway, I think it looks pretty good now (thanks to Phill R. from Phantom Restoration), so I'm finally posting it on CAF. I should probably note that the explosion on the right side is original art, but it was cut and pasted from a different board.

Fun fact -- Howard Chaykin said "Holy Sh*t" when I showed this to him at the New York Comic Con in 2014 where he signed it (albeit a bit overzealously). Al Milgrom confirmed that he inked the cover, and he also signed this in November 2025 at the Big Apple Con. Per Al, someone else at Marvel whited out and redrew the woman's face after he had inked it.

"How am I supposed to fight with you grabbing my ankle!"

"Stop kicking! Why are you wearing spurs in space?"

Nice piece, congrats.

Ha - yeah thanks!  I guess Chaykin was definitely going for a space western theme here.

A great classic archetype Howard Chaykin hero!  I think people bought this comic if they were a Chaykin fan and knew what they were getting into.  Kids of that time couldn't relate as his work had an air of sophistication with the fantasy style that pointed more towards sci-fi paperback covers.

I've never heard of the character, but that can't be a surprise.  This a really cool cover.  Classic Chaykin.
