Description
Daniel Bishop (1900-1959) was the longtime political cartoon for the St. Louis Star-Times, where he was the leading editorial cartoonist for two decades, ending in 1951. Bishop got his start at the Portland Journal in Oregon in 1925, working as the paper’s editorial cartoonist until 1929, when Bishop left for St. Louis. I’m glad to be able to offer a lot of two Bishop editorial cartoons done for the Portland Journal the year before he left the paper. The first one, titled “In Need of a Good Samaritan”, shows Uncle Sam as he tries to do heavy lifting with the Farm Plank, as the Democratic donkey rushes in. This piece was published on June 25, 1928. The second piece is also farm-related, as it pictures the Republican elephant trying to hoe corn, while the corn is represented by the Democratic donkey. This piece is titled “Embarrassing, To Say the Least”, and was published on July 19, 1928. Both pieces predate the Great Depression, which would hit farmers as hard as anyone in the country. Both cartoons measure 15”x 11-ish” wide. One is slightly wider than the other. Both are drawn with litho crayon on Coquille paper, which Roy Crane popularized at the time. The conditions are solid Fine+, with small pieces missing out of the upper corners, due to thumbtack holes. Two wonderful editorial cartoons bargain-priced at $100.00 + 15.00 shipping.
