Description

I got this in a lot of three pieces from Comic Crusader. This is the only issue of the fanzine I had so it's cool that two pieces are from it. Now, I'm going to write something controversial, heretical even to some diehard fans -- Cockrum did better art at his short period at DC than at Marvel. Yes, he did a lot more at Marvel but he was really too slow to do a monthly book (only inking himself there a few times) and the people who inked him at Marvel never got the sterling results he'd shown at DC. Perhaps he was someone who was hard to ink or that sheen to his work only showed up at the end when he did the inks (improvisation or retries perhaps as every page I've owned (Starlin page from Avengers #107 w/ flashback to Avengers #2, long gone) had a fair amount of whiteout, And, he was a great inker at Marvel -- on Starlin, Tuksa (never looked better than in the Cap. sequences in Avengers #106 & 107), Buckler, John Buscema and others. it's too bad Al Williamson wasn't working at Marvel then because he would have been a good match for Cockrum. Now, even at DC he wasn't fast. He did two monthly issues of Superboy and the Legion of Super-Heroes but the rest were bi-monthly. In a way that's how the DC system could enable artists who couldn't do a monthly book -- most of the stories were in one issue or a couple at most. That's also how Neal Adams was able to make an impression. In the article he talks about doing Captain Marvel jr. regularly but he only did one story -- in Shazam #9.

It was definitely a great time period as Cockrum got to design all those Legion characters and anything not used was held back for his Marvel work later in the decade.  This is a great pin up in the revival of Shazam!

It's a really charming image of Captain Marvel Jr., with flowing locks and cape blowing the wind. The innocence of the genre comes across so well.

Very nice!  It's great you were able to identify the issue this came from. While I'm more of a Marvel guy, I do really love Dave's style from this era and it's too bad he didn't get to ink more of his own art at Marvel.
