DescriptionThis page follows the intense murder scene which occurred on the last one.I really like the first 3 panels being inserted into each other to increase on the tension of the reveal of the murder (within the story). The first one sees the guard worryingly noticing a disturbing noise in the night as the body falls and is being dragged on, away from prying eyes. And his expression is important as I find that despite the smallness of his head, we easily perceive how worried he is here. Then, after the eerie slashing noise of knife slicing the body, we get a creepy blub blubbing one indicating blood flowing on the floor… …and then a great third panel with all the guards running to the murder scene. What’s fantastic here is how Spiegle established the depth of the scene with 3 guards running from different point in the background but also with the corresponding size of those streetlamps. Not to mention the flow of the blood leading the reader’s eyes to panel 4. In which we get the usual police drama of a murder scene, quite busy with all the aftermath requires. And again, just look how grounded it all feels just by Spiegle adding conceivable backgrounds, depth and the tail of that police vehicle. And we finish on a fifth panel of a close-up on the police captain worryingly postulating his hypothesis for the criminal case. His over tilted, extreme close-up head adds to the worried aspect and its angle again points the reader to that bottom right corner. Again, great, quiet, thoughtful and seemingly effortless storytelling by a great artist. Social/Sharing |

A dark and bloody affair. It's like the Russian Nesting Doll of panel stacking up top! I really like the inking during that sequence and all the town details in the bottom left panel.

Yes, those I really like how first three panels expand to give a sense of motion.

The stacked panels are great! Just leaves enough for us to get what's happening in between panel 1 to 3. It's futuristic and alien, but it has all the shadows and darkness of crime noir stories we are all familar with.

A very lovely page. I really like the "cheat" of those first three "telescoped" / inset panels, as it makes it feel like the runner is approaching you at the same time as the camera is zooming in. Really fun technique! The fourth panel is a beautiful rendering of a classic sci-fi city - a nice slice of life - and then the final panel's extreme close-up gives us another fine burst of Dan's emotive brushwork. Just a really sweet page, F M - great post!

Nice analysis of the page. Agreed on the inset panel use for storytelling. That lower left panel really does a lot of work in setting out the scene, and it's very pleasingly composed as well.

I wonder if the murder had anything to do meatballs?
