The Amazing Spider-Man - Unused Cover - Ron Garney

When I saw RomitaMan post this as unknown and requesting info I did some recon, quickly became interested and reached out. Since it’s unlikely I'll ever get to add a published Ron Garney ASM cover to the wall, I jumped at the opportunity to pick this up. I've been looking for a good example of that iconic upside down Spidey pose as well and this sure checked that box. I was able to find an image of the prelim, with its Title & Issue lines filled out as ASM #538. That issue was during Civil War though and the published main cover had that distinct half & half format. Mike located a color version which I've also posted here.  Another potential fit is for ASM #529, suggested by Bill Reinhold.  #529 does feature Spidey going up against some guys resembling those here but it is an Iron Spider costume issue.  So perhaps this was drawn before the costume switch was conceived.  There was also an alt version of #530 up on ebay, supporting this explanation, since that cover was near identical to the published version but also in traditional costume.  

Regardless of the how, why or what it is...  I think its a pretty bad ass piece. The shock captured on the faces of the baddies, realizing Spider-Man has them in his sights, is pretty impressive. The lighting and shadowing creates a great vibe throughout the scene. The entire alley is pretty well detailed. And while it’s not obvious in the picture you can make out some detail on Spidey. There’s a back logo there and some subtle body definition as well. Thanks to Mike for making it available and thanks for taking a look.
