Description
Roberto de la Torre - Conan "Bound in Black Stone" Double-Page Splash

The Savage Sword lives on!

I am beyond stoked to finally add this absolute monster of a piece to my gallery. This is the original double-page spread from the Conan the Barbarian Vol. 1: Bound in Black Stone Deluxe Edition, and in my opinion, it shows Roberto de la Torre at the absolute top of his game. If you’ve been following the Titan Comics run, you know Rob is the real deal. He’s openly talked about his influences being Victor de la Fuente, John Buscema, and Joe Kubert, and looking at this spread, you can see exactly how he’s distilled those legends into his own powerhouse style.

Seeing this piece in person is a completely different experience than looking at the printed book. The raw energy of the composition is incredible, with Conan right in the thick of a whirlwind of steel and fury against a horde of warriors. I love how the action flows across the entire spread, anchored by those heavy blacks and that gritty, gestural line work that gives the art such a visceral, classic atmosphere. From the splatter effects to the jagged detail in the rock formations, every inch of this board feels alive and dangerous.

Owning a published centerpiece from this specific Deluxe Edition is a huge win for my collection. It perfectly captures the grim tone of the Bound in Black Stone arc and stands as a definitive image for this modern era of the character. I couldn’t be happier to have this one in the collection.

A feast of butchery and rip roaring combat for the eyes!  De La Torre breathes power in Conan's swing and leaves a pile of dead bodies over both pages!

I had a chance to chat with Rob, and it was great to hear him break down his style. While he acknowledged the John Buscema influence people often see, he actually credits Victor de la Fuente as his biggest inspiration.

I wasn’t that familiar with de la Fuente’s work at first, but after looking him up, the influence is obvious. You can really see it in the gritty texture and the way he uses heavy, expressive line work. It gives the art a raw, European feel that goes beyond the classic Buscema look.

I agree. It’s fun to imagine John’s reaction. I know he was always very particular about who inked his work, so I’d love to know what he would think of Rob’s approach.

Wonderful! I'm glad you have a larger image that can be blown up, as both the detail and the influence of Buscema are fantastic. The choreography of the fight in particular feels like Big John, and the degree of carnage is fabulous.
