Description
Wallace Wood dipping into sword-and-sorcery at Marvel? Works for me.
His four short stories in Tower of Shadows (#5–8) are classic Wood: moody lighting, heavy shadows, armor that actually feels like steel, capes that move. Something ominous always in the air.
I love this page from his offbeat “Beowulf” tale in TOS #6: Tight compositions. No wasted lines. Just atmosphere for days. And of course, some very lovely women.
He wrote as well as drew these stories, and they actually pre-date Conan #1. Wood was already playing in this sandbox before the tidal wave hit.
Short run. Small stories. Huge visual punch.

For me, Wally Wood's work on Tower of Shadows has always been primarily about one thing: gorgeous staging and lighting technique!

Beautiful tight shots putting forth a point of focus for the reader with every panel to serve the story.

Wood's male characters were always firm-jawed, often double-lit, and steely-eyed. The beauty of the ink line is always the major draw on a Wood page. These S&S Marvel and Warren stories have always been my favorites among his works. And I dig those crazy horned caps that he drew so often.

Lots of beautiful people here. Very nice. Is this Wood in the 70s.
