Description
Chances are slim I can afford a full figure Finch in the JSA sketchbook, I told myself. I didn't want to downgrade the book from full figures, the focus since its start in 2009, to head or bust sketches. You can therefore understand my excitement when I learned he was doing 30-minute almost-full-figure sketches in my price range during cons. His sketches are incredible.

Armed with plenty of reference, I lined up for preview night during OAX 2026 to ask for the Sandman Mystery Theater version. I didn't know if he had a preference so I added that whichever costume he wanted to do was also fine. He went with my first choice.

Watching the piece come alive was a blast. I tried to capture his process for the Sandman in the additional images.

His enjoyment drawing the character for the first time shows. He inked...and inked..and inked crazy texture, shadows, and folds into Sandman's trench coat and clothing. Shadows in the revolver's cylinder for bullets give the gun depth. Gas mask is vintage Sandman Mystery Theater and the outlines and hints of gas, especially on the right, convey motion. I'm pleased as punch with the result!

Yes, it great to see him work and build and build from scratch.  Very satisfying result too as Finch does give you his concentration for every bit of that 30 minutes!

What an inspired choice. So suited to his style and yet not something I've ever seen him do before. Fantastic.

Why do dogs run in circles? Because it’s hard to run in squares.

Fantastic piece! Now we need Finch to do a full-fledged Golden Age Sandman one-shot set in the Sandman Mystery Theater time period.

Finch is probably the last artist I expected to see you have interest in getting a sketch from, but what the hell do I know? It turned out beautifully though, and the best part in my eyes is seeing it come to life starting from a blank canvas!

Great, gritty image. I love the GA Sandman, and this gives him a bit of a western gunslinger feel. And that is some gun.

Detailed but a little more loose and organic...I dig that a lot.  Congrats!
