Mephistopheles in hell - circa 1890s. 1 panel in sequence of 4. Faust.

This is a small original painting by British Illustrator Cecil Cutler produced sometime around the 1890s. It depicts Mephistopheles with cowering underlings, presumably in Hell. The painting is one of a series of four which are all painted in sequence on the same board. The other paintings can be seen in the additional images. Unfortunately my photos and scans do not really do them justice. I will try to update with better pictures at some point.

The depiction of Mephistopheles in the first, second and fourth painting are thought to be of the actor Henry Irving playing the character at the Lyceum Theatre in London, in the play 'Faust'. The third - less than glamorous - picture is likely of Ellen Terry playing Margaret in the same play.

I have yet to find where these pictures were published.
