Looney Leo by Jamie Jones

OAX 2026 Pre-Show Commission!!!

Looney Leo appeared in a single issue of Astro City (v2 #13). He is a cartoon character from around the 1930s who accidentally got brought to life by a mad scientist's ray gun. He goes on to have a rough life, being tricked by some villains into breaking the law, and eventually settles in as a night club owner. He is loosely based on Humphrey Bogart's character Rick from Casablanca.

Jamie Jones likes old-timey stuff from the era of pulps. He did a Stingray for me back in 2024 (Stingray by Jamie Jones) that I absolutely adore. With that out of the way, we were free to explore other avenues. Having Jamie draw Leo seemed like a no-brainer. When I saw that he was offering painted commissions for OAX, I knew exactly what to ask for.

Jamie perfectly captures Leo the nightclub owner in his white suit and bowtie (Jamie wears bowties!) with his drink and cigarette, having him bursting out of a film cell, just as he burst out of the screen in the comic. We even see glimpses of the less happy times of Leo's life in a couple of the other cells. This is such a colorful and delightful painting!
