Description
After a mad dash home, and a week to recuperate, it’s been fun to see recaps and reviews of #OAX2026 pop up on socials. Rubén’s show last night was very entertaining, and today CAF’s YouTube channel dropped a recording of the Kirby Award ceremony from OAX. The awards were one of the absolute highlights of the weekend.

Everything came together beautifully, capping the extensive labor and preparations that the show and award organizers had obviously put in - kudos to all. The weather was perfect, the sky was like an impressionist painting, and Kasra wasn’t kidding when he said that the hotel had built a beautiful venue. I kept imaging some sort of canvas and steel situation, but the pavilion really is gorgeous.

Awarded the ‘Newcomer’ Kirby this year was Zoe Thorogood. Her acceptance speech was delightful, thoughtful, and poignant. It is well worth watching the video for that alone.

To commemorate the win, I’m posting the very first piece I got from Zoe. When I checked my records it is coincidentally 5 years almost exactly since I purchased this from her. Dan T and I bought pages at the same time, and we shared a rue laugh over the tube shipping, but also spoke excitedly about Zoe’s talent, and what she will go on to accomplish. I think she is just getting started.

A deserved choice. The delicate lines belie a real sense of unease in this quiet town scene.

Well said! OAX was a great experience and seeing all the related posts really do highlight a lot of the memorable moments. Zoe is such a wonderful young talent and this page really exemplifies this.

Loved how thoughtful, honest, and vulnerable her speech was! Looks like you and Dan were ahead of the curve (as usual) in collecting art from a stand out "newcomer"!

So much detail... exquisite.

I love a well drawn quiet moment. Something very soothing about this type of art.

I'm not big on social media, but Zoe is the only artist I have ever followed on Instagram.  I think she's insanely talented, both as a writer and illustrator.  She's had a very rough year personally, but I think her work has become somewhat therapeutic for her.  I've been wanting something by her for a while now, but just waiting for that right piece to jump on.  Congrats on this wonderful splash.

Look at this photograph
Every time I do, it makes me laugh
Now powerline lips so red?
And what the hell is in Zoe's head?
And this is where I grew up
I think the present owner mixed it up
I never knew Eranga went without
Convention floor is hard for sneaking out
And this is where I Thorogood
Most of the time newcomer things to do
Criminal record says I won it twice
I must've done on CAF a dozen times
I wonder if it's too late
Should I go Tech and try to graduate?
Life's better now than it was back then
If I was Dan, I wouldn't let me in

Oh, oh, oh
Oh, God, I, I
Any Tancredi of looking OAX more
I had Dan's photo album spread out on convention floor
It's hard to say it, time to say it
Goodbye, goodbye
Even Tancredi of walking out the front door
I found the photo of the friend, Dan I was looking for
It's hard to say it, time to say it
Goodbye, goodbye
(Goodbye)

So crazy that she won 2 "Newcomer" awards 7 years apart! She seems like such a lovely person, which is even more important than her being a really good artist. A simple yet lovely nighttime street scene! You guys were definitely ahead of the curve with this one! I enjoyed having you stick around afor as long as you did last night, by the way. Always great to have you drop in, whether in studio or in chat!

Gorgeous scene that matches in tone. Zoe effectively conveys emotion in an empty setting and it is wonderful. Even better memories accompany.
