RIP Clement Oubrerie 12/23/1966 - 03/01/2026

Posting this cover in remembrance of Clement Oubrerie who recently passed away from ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease). I was shocked to hear as I didn't realize he was suffering.

In recent years I've grown to become a big fan of his artwork. A very stylized and scratchy style that works splendidly with his colorwork. I first became enthralled through his series Aya De Yopougon. It is a slice of life book about life in the Ivory Coast in the 1980's centered around the main character, a girl named Aya. Beautiful, intelligent, and independent, it shows her growing up to adulthood and the various cultural issues she faces. So entertaining that I did a video about if for my channel:

This piece is from the 7th French Volume. Drawn and Quarterly has been publishing them with the first 2 books containing 3 volumes each and with this 7th volume it looks like they've begun to do the individual volumes in hardcover. Really recommend this read for fans of Love and Rockets. I'm thankful to be able to have this cover as well as a couple of interior pages in my collection.

His Picasso graphic novel was also wonderful both as a read and visually, of course. Really a major loss for me as a comic art fan and a reader, as well as the comics world in general.

Very sorry to hear about their passing- thanks for sharing this cover. The scratchy style is there yet still feels like a clean and intentional finish. I quite enjoy it, without having read the material, and the facial expressions are so good. RIP.

A real loss. I know you really loved his work and seeing this piece I can tell why.

Nice cover giving a slice of life vibe of the bustling 1970's Ivory Coast and finding the beauty in humor that was universal to all audiences.

Nice art.  I was introduced to the artist at an exhibition in Angouleme in 2023.  There was a real atmosphere to the art and pages that celebrated culture in an inclusive and inviting way.   I had no idea they were suffering with an illness.

His published work looks exactly the way most artists' drawings look when they sketch in their sketch books. It's tight, but still sketchy with no need to define the lines or erase any of the scratchier ones.
