Description
I’ll be honest, I never followed Psylocke’s story past the Chris Claremont and Jim Lee runs. Everything after that classic baddie heroine arc was mostly off my radar. But as many of you already know, landing her iconic love triangle page was a massive personal collecting moment for me.

Shortly after that, I started asking myself a question I couldn’t shake: this character’s design has always spoken to me, so why don’t I collect more Psylocke art? I made a quiet promise to myself to stay open and grab the next great piece I came across.

A few months in, a friend introduced me to a Japanese artist named GODTAIL through a sketch cover he had acquired featuring both Psylocke and Magik, two of the most beloved female X-Men. My friend is a comic book collector, not an original art guy, so the fact that this was the first piece of art he ever shared with me made it hit differently. That image left a real impression.

Then GODTAIL’s name came up again, this time in the form of Absolute Batman #15, featuring the Joker’s first appearance in the Absolute Universe. A friend offered the original art in a group chat and I’ll admit I was tempted. Another friend claimed it before I had to make a decision, which honestly felt like a relief at the time.

More time passed and I started following GODTAIL more closely. When he opened a commission list, I jumped in. Who did I request? Psylocke, of course. But that’s a story for another post.

With a commission already in the pipeline, I was feeling good about having a GODTAIL piece on the way. Then he posted another cover: Psylocke Ninja #1. I reached out to his rep immediately and closed the deal.
I haven’t read the book. Probably never will. But this image spoke to me the moment I saw it.

When the scan of the art was presented, I noticed it was outlined in gold paint. With a curious collecting perspective through the American cultural lens, I had to ask. His answer was simple and direct: “It’s my signature.” He uses gold paint to outline his pencils because he wants that process to be physically embedded in the work itself. It was culturally unconventional for us comic art collectors who loved our untouched art, but I decided to reserve judgment until I had it in hand.

And when it finally arrived and it was in my hands, I understood. Holding it felt like standing inside a centuries-old cathedral, there is a sacred, almost devotional quality to this piece that I did not expect and could not put down. The detailed, tight pencils were only elevated by the gold, liquid paint that softly elevated the graphite. It’s a very special touch by a master.

Happy to finally share this with my CAF friends. Thanks to Alwyn and GODTAIL for letting me have this one.

So cool - the art really "jumps" out and is extremely nice. I was also interested in the gold background and the story makes total sense to me - thanks for including that back-story. Great cover - congrats!!!

A great looking cover and really like the gold detailing, it enhances this cover and done really well. Cheers, maybe one day you'll take a peek at the story since you have the cover.  I haven't read yet and sometimes that ruins the great cover experience but also sometimes it helps if the story and art inside are great.  Good luck!

Loving the Anime/Japanese infused style artistically and the combination of super tight pencils and vibrant bright colors works really well. Very cool (and different) type of Pyslocke, but a great cover nonethless. congrats!

Yes, the gold gives a Gothic cathedral vibe! Pencils, which are excellent, and gold complement each other nicely! Congratulations!

Congrats! The story takes place during the era that you were a fan of so perhaps you'll give it a shot.
