Description

My first issue of X-Men was #149, in which Kitty Pryde attempted to make her own super-hero costume out of whatever she found lying around. This included a gold lamé ballet leotard and tights, a tank top, gym shorts, leg warmers, kitchen gloves, roller skates, and a cat mask that must have been left by Jean Grey, painted purple. The X-Men were not impressed, and the roller skates proved impractical while adventuring. Kitty's ever-changing costume would be an ongoing gag over the next couple of years, and this one was gone after two issues.

Gone, but not forgotten! I liked Colton Worley's painted works and asked him to pay tribute to this insane costume in a layout inspired by Bob Larkin's painted cover for Dazzler #1, filling the headshot circles with Kitty's friends and foes. Worley usually comes up with his own layouts but was game for something off the beaten path. So behold, Disco Kitty! It's huge, 18"x24" on a cotton canvas permeated by gesso sealant. Emma Frost seems suitably annoyed as usual, while Peter and Illyana try to keep a straight face in response to Kitty's well-meant but ultimately hideous concoction. Colton did a great job with the metallic lamé sheen, the fabric rumpling, and the starfield too.

My scanner just couldn't do justice to the wide and deep color range, so I've posted a photo as the main image and a larger scan in the additional images.

UXM 149 was a Cockrum issue, so it was designed by the fashionista of the X-Men!  For 1981, it has a Mork from Ork and muppets kind of influence!

A great choice for a commission and Colton nailed it! Emma looks personally offended by Kitty's costume.

Love the idea to homage the Dazzler #1 cover around Kitty and company! Colton did a fantastic job with this. That Emma facial expression is swap your profile photo worthy! ;-)

You know you have style, when you have this kind of ensemble just lying about!

Super fun twist on a classic!  Worley doing his thing.  Particularly like that Colossus.  Congrats!

Great fun. Yes, it does look like Jean Grey's old Marvel Girl mask. I love Emma Frost's disapproving gaze.
