Rhino - Chris Bachalo

One of my primary goals at Planet ComicCon 2026 was to get a sketch from Chris Bachalo. He only does a few shows a year, so I wanted to take advantage of the opportunity.

He was clear that lines would be long, so I got to the con line super early and rushed to his table first thing. Even with that, I was lucky to be 8 of his 8 remarks that day! He had a great system with cards, so luckily I didn’t have to stay in line all day. He took his time with people, so he didn’t even get to my sketch until 30 mins left in the day!

He seemed a bit reluctant to draw Rhino. “It’s been a few years. And I only drew him once or twice…” I ensured him that I’d be happy with anything.

And I’m blown away! I love that he seems part character and part landscape. I can almost picture vegetation growing on his mountainous back. Add in the fractured horns and he seems like some prehistoric creature. There also seems to be a sadness to his muted expression. So much detail with a few lines.

For more common requests (Death, Magik), he was chatting with the commissioner. For me, he was mostly quiet. I like to think that he had to focus on Rhino.
