Marius de Zayas was born in Veracruz, Mexico and emigrated to New York with his family in 1907. He joined the art staff of the New York Evening World newspaper and quickly became known for his striking portraits and caricatures of celebrities. These two (2) final original drawings were published in the Evening World and were part of his Soirés of Paris series that he began in 1914. In 1923 de Zayas moved to Europe and spent the remainder of his life in France.

Vaudeville singer and entertainer Eva Tanguqy is portrayed in the drawing of a man and woman walking in a park; her name is written on the back. The drawing of a woman with her maid was published in the January 23, 1915 issue of Puck magazine; the dimensions of the image are 15.5" x 13" (39.37 cm x 33.02 cm). It is titled "A Strange Request" in the magazine, and the caption reads:

"Mrs. Gadsby: If any caller should ask for me or Mr. Gadsby, Nora, just say there's nobody home.
New Maid (astonished): But you said I wasn't to use slang, Ma'am."

Tanguay drawing board has become tan with age and there is a horizontal crease in the image 1.25" from the bottom edge; woman and maid drawing is mildly discolored; Wear and markings in keeping with illustration and publishing process.
Both not framed.
