Description
A "Flapper of 1800" is depicted in profile with her maid holding a hat box and cradling a little monkey. The maid is a step to the right and a step behind her. Overlapping garments visually link the two as a double portrait. They form a single silhouetted figural group set against a grey wall. The painting communicated a spirit of glamour associated with the upper classes and was used to illustrate the story " Is the Young Person Coming Back, for Harper's Monthly Magazine, August 1924. Anna Betts and her sister, Ethel, are trailblazing female artists/illustrators. They studied under famed artist/teacher Howard Pyle, and while his academic training is evident in Anna Betts's style, Betts carved out her own style that still stands the test of time.
