I discovered Jorge Garza just by scrolling on Instagram (@qetzaart) and was instantly enamored with his Aztec inspired art. I have been interested in Aztec and Mayan culture since elementary school, so it was so cool to see his Azteca Pop style that blends the folklore of past and present.
I often go with black and white commissions to save money since Rhino can be blandly grey. I’m extra worried when someone, like Jorge, does such amazing and vibrant color work. Am I wasting their talent?
Here, I love the subtle use of pink accents on his teeth and headdress. And, while the photo doesn’t do it justice, the grey almost looks vibrant in contrast to the darker bands. And what can I say about the square head? It’s perfect!!
I highly recommend people visit the Museo National de Antropología and Tenochtitlan in Mexico City. I now have a Rhino who would fit in there!!
