Description

Both David Finch and Danny Miki are each well-known for their meticulous attention to detail and this DPS showcases their talents together. The result is a truly gorgeous page with the present scan not doing it sufficient justice. In particular, the large image of Sauron allows both these artists to display their considerable talents. I have never been disappointed by anything that Miki has inked and, for that matter, anything that Finch has pencilled as well. There are also several members of the New Avengers in the inset panel as well, including Spider-Man, Wolverine, Captain America, Iron Man, Spider-Woman and Luke Cage. The overall design as well as perspective of the pages is also excellent, in my view.

[Spoiler alert: although Sauron appears to be fatally wounded in this DPS, he subsequently recovers as he has absorbed Wolverine's powers of regenerative healing.]

Not many modern artists do detail as well as Finch! that Sauron image running across the DPS is so impressive, and really like that inset panel shot of our heroes as they look up in shock! Miki is no slouch brining out Finch's lines here either. Excellent addition!

Many thanks, my friend. Yes, the detail on this DPS is insane, which is what drew me to it in the first place. To do justice to such penciled detail, a really good inker is necessary and, as you have pointed out, Miki did a splendid job.

BTW, everyone misses you on Ruben's show. Hope you are well.

Squeezing the heroes into the second panel, and crowding them at the edges of panels below, really emphasises the scale and threat of Sauron. Nicely done.

A terrifyingly beautiful piece! You know, I'm amazed at how every time I see a Sauron appearance anywhere, but especially on a very powerful depiction such as this one, it immediately gives me a wonder feeling of nostalgia for the Claremon/Byrne/Austin Savage Land issues of X-Men in which Sauron appeared. Congratulations on acquiring this, CAB, it's a winner!

Many thanks, Rubén. The page is indeed extremely striking and it was very astute of the artists to do a huge Sauron appearance across a DPS whilst simultaneously embellishing the page with fine inset panels.

Many thanks, West. It was very astute of the artists to use a DPS so as to emphasize the giant image of Sauron.

Many thanks, James. The nature of the subject matter just lent this to a large and detailed image such as this. It is even more striking in person.

This was killer!  Finch relaunched the post DisAssembled Avengers and put them at the top of the charts!  This DPS showed the same great intensity of his Ascension art plus his rapidly improvements in storytelling.  I think he sped up a lot of Bendis' scripts to pack this title full of action!

Many thanks, Marcus. Yes, Finch really outdid himself on this particular series. But the Miki inks really clinched it for this particular piece.

A stunningly breathtaking spread, my dear CAB, that would be utterly entrancing - hypnotic, even! - even without Sauron trying to put the whammy on our heroes in that superb panel 2...!  Finch draping Sauron's creepy claws over that second panel lends some great dimensionality to the spread, and Miki's backgrounds (especially on the top of the piece) assure Dr. Lykos' entrance (and this entire spread) are unforgettable.  Brutal, beautiful detailing, with my favorite possibly being the leaf shadows on Sauron's leg: just an environmental "truth" that I feel others might skimp out on to accentuate the splash.  Utterly explosive and brilliant, CAB, from one of my favorite runs!  ENORMOUS congrats! :)
