The Battle of Jutland in 1916 off the coast of Denmark was the only major surface engagement between the British and German fleets during World War I. Although the British Grand Fleet lost more ships and over twice as many men, the German High Fleet was repulsed and remained in port for the rest of the war. Germany had ironically devoted considerable resources building a surface fleet to challenge Britain's command of the seas but in the end relied on U-boats to attack British ships and shipping.

German emphasis on thicker armor over speed and superior gunnery and shells, and British emphasis on firing speed over safety were major factors in the heavy British losses. Britain lost HMS Queen Mary and two other battlecruisers while Germany lost only one. The Queen Mary broke in two when a German shell penetrated the ship and detonated a shell magazine, leaving only 20 survivors of a crew of 1286 men.
